Give young people freedom to investigate signals, technology and the questions they uncover.
XMIT gives young people real, hands-on experiences with radio communication, electronics and wireless technology — then gives educators the tools to make those experiences possible wherever they are.
XMIT has three connected goals: inspire young people through radio and STEM, enable educators with the resources to deliver those experiences, and help newly licensed young operators gain meaningful experience on air.
Why XMIT?
A radio signal is invisible, but the experience of finding one, understanding it and using it can be unforgettable. XMIT uses radio as a gateway into science, technology, engineering, electronics, communication and discovery.
We do not measure success simply by how many young people gain an amateur-radio licence. If someone leaves wanting to know why, wanting to build something, or seeing STEM differently, XMIT has done its job.
Give young people freedom to investigate signals, technology and the questions they uncover.
Touch the controls, change things, test ideas, make mistakes and discover what happens.
Use communication to connect people, technology, communities and countries.
Create memorable experiences that encourage young people to keep exploring what is possible.
Our three goals
XMIT is built around three connected objectives: create memorable experiences for young people, equip educators to deliver them, and remove barriers that stop young radio amateurs from getting meaningful experience on air.
Use real radio communication to open doors into electronics, physics, the electromagnetic spectrum, propagation, antennas, SDR, satellites, digital communication and engineering.
Make XMIT available to approved educators and active STEM Ambassadors across the UK, supported by practical resources that make delivering radio activities easier.
Develop free access for newly licensed young UK radio amateurs so that passing an exam opens the door to meaningful HF experience rather than an equipment bill they cannot afford.
XMIT Remote Network
At the heart of XMIT is a growing network of professionally engineered remote amateur-radio stations. Permanently installed at carefully selected sites, they stay ready to use while the young person can be in a classroom, club or youth setting hundreds of miles away.
More than HF
Radio communication sits at the intersection of an extraordinary number of technologies. XMIT can use those connections to let young people explore far more than making contacts.
Talk to people around the world and discover how radio communication really works.
Build, solder, test, measure and understand real circuits rather than just reading about them.
See the radio spectrum and make signals that are normally invisible visible.
Experiment with how radio waves travel and how antenna design changes what we hear.
Receive satellites, explore telemetry and discover communication beyond Earth.
Solve problems, test ideas, make mistakes and improve them through practical experimentation.
Who XMIT is for
The XMIT model is designed to work in real educational environments — with real timetables, limited setup time and young people who want to do more than watch.
STEM enrichment, after-school clubs, physics and electronics activities, and memorable communication experiences.
Scouts, Guides, cadets, clubs and other groups looking for practical technology and communication activities.
Approved educators can use the XMIT remote network and supporting resources to bring RF engineering to life.
Our long-term objective is to give newly licensed young operators meaningful HF experience without the cost of building a station first.
Built on experience
XMIT grew from years of educational outreach by volunteers from Hilderstone Radio Society, working alongside the Thanet Radio Infrastructure Group and local schools. That experience shaped a project designed around what actually works with young people.
